Tattoo and alternative models

Tattoo modeling and alt modeling

An alt model agency decides whether your ink fits its board, which clients ever see you and what share of every fee it keeps. This is the direct route. Publish one reviewed profile with your photos, your categories, your city, your day rate and your free dates, and brands booking tattooed and alternative models email you themselves.

The short answer

Do you need a tattoo model agency?

No. Tattoo modeling work in the United States is mostly commercial and brand-led: streetwear and alternative fashion labels, tattoo aftercare and supply brands, music, beverage, fitness and lifestyle campaigns, and shop and convention promotion. Much of it is booked direct by the brand or the photographer. An alt model agency is one way in. It usually costs 10 to 20 percent of every fee, and few US agencies run a board built for heavily tattooed models.

Maxgirls is the other way. It is a reviewed model directory, not an agency. Your profile carries your photos with the ink visible, your categories, city, height, day-rate range and availability. A person reviews it before it goes public, and brands, photographers and production teams filter the directory and email you directly. We take no commission on anything you book.

Alternative modeling agency or a direct listing

The middle column describes how agency boards generally work, not one named company. Terms vary by agency and market, and your own contract is the only one that binds you.

Maxgirls You. Your day-rate range is on the profile before the first email
Exclusivity

Maxgirls You change your categories, rate and availability yourself, the same day

Where an agency genuinely wins

A good agency reaches clients that only take agency submissions: large fashion campaigns, some national advertising, and runway. It also holds the rate when a client pushes and chases the invoice. A few US agencies do describe themselves around individuality: The Option Agency in Portland and Los Angeles says it represents talent that transcends traditional boundaries, and Alt Talent in the Chicago area describes itself as supporting diverse and creative collaboration. If a board like that takes you, the access can be worth the commission. For most tattooed models, the brands that want the look are the ones booking direct.

Tattoos, category by category

Can models have tattoos in every kind of work?

32 percent of US adults have a tattoo and 22 percent have more than one. Among women aged 18 to 29 it is 56 percent. Pew Research Center, July 2023.

Say whether you accept coverage

Some bookings are open to a tattooed model if a makeup artist can cover a piece for one shot. Write "coverage OK" or "no coverage" in your bio. It saves an email and it widens the jobs you can say yes to.

Face, neck and hand ink

Placements you cannot cover with clothing narrow mainstream commercial work and are often the reason an alt brand books you. Show them plainly in the first photo. A brand that wants them will find you, and one that does not will not waste your day.

Date your digitals

New ink changes the look a client booked. Refresh your photos after each new piece is healed and note the month on the set, so nobody arrives expecting the arm they saw last spring.

Content that closes doors

Imagery a brand could read as hateful, violent or explicit ends a booking on sight, however good the work is. That is the one tattoo question that actually decides mainstream jobs, far more than size or count.

Quote the licence, not just the day

Booking direct means the number you send is the number. Set your base fee and see what the usage does to it before you reply to a brief from a shop, a label or a brand.

A published range means the first email is about the shoot, not about whether you are affordable.

What these numbers are. The base is the figure you set. The licence multipliers are this tool's own stated bands, printed so you can see the shape of a quote: media 1.0 to 3.0×, territory 1.0 to 2.0×, term 0.85 to 3.0×, exclusivity 1.0 to 1.75×. They are not a survey, an average or a market rate. Maxgirls publishes no rate table and never sees what you were paid. The reasoning behind each line.

Getting listed

Four steps, about twenty minutes

No application fee, no test shoot you pay for, no portfolio package. Alt models get more than their share of "you have the look, pay for the shoot" messages. If a company asks for money before it has booked you anything, read how to spot a modeling scam first.

  1. Shoot digitals that show the ink A headshot, a full-length and a close shot of each major piece, in daylight, no filter and no heavy retouching. A brand booking a tattooed model is booking the actual tattoos.
  2. Pick every category that fits Commercial, fashion and promotional together is normal for an alt model. Each category you choose is another filter that returns you, and listing in more than one costs nothing.
  3. Put placements and coverage in the headline and bio Sleeves, back piece, neck, hands, piercings, and whether you accept coverage makeup. That is what a booker reads after the category and city filters have done their job.
  4. Set a day rate and keep availability current Your rate range is visible before anyone writes, so the first email is about the shoot. Availability is one click: available now, this month, or booked.

Questions

Tattoo modeling, answered

Something missing? Write to support@maxgirls.com and a person will answer it.

Can models have tattoos?

Yes. Tattoos rule out very little paid modeling work in the US today. Commercial, lifestyle, fitness, streetwear, music and beauty brands all book tattooed models, because 41 percent of American adults under 30 have at least one tattoo (Pew Research Center, 2023). The work that still leans clean-skinned is high fashion runway and some catalog, where a stylist may ask for coverage.

Can models have tattoos and piercings?

Yes, and many alternative models have both. Piercings are easier than tattoos because they come out for a job that needs a clean look, so say in your bio which ones are removable. Stretched lobes, septum rings and facial piercings narrow a mainstream booking the same way face and neck tattoos do, and widen an alt one.

Do modeling agencies accept tattoos?

Many do, mostly on commercial and lifestyle boards. A few US agencies describe themselves as built around individuality rather than a single standard look. Straight fashion boards still tend to prefer small or coverable ink. An agency is optional, though: most brands booking tattooed models for e-commerce, apparel and content book them direct.

How do I become a tattoo model?

Get current digitals that show every piece clearly, in daylight, without filters, and a second set with the ink covered if you are open to that. Pick the categories that book your look, write your placements in your bio, then publish a profile with your city, a day-rate range and your availability so brands can reach you.

How much do tattoo models make?

The same as any model in the same category. A tattooed model on a commercial or apparel booking is paid that category's rate, and the usage licence moves the fee far more than the ink does. Tattoo aftercare, tattoo supply and shop campaigns may want exactly your ink, which strengthens your position on the rate. How much models get paid breaks it down.

Can commercial models have tattoos?

Yes. Commercial modeling books believable customers, and a large share of US customers under 50 are tattooed. A bank or pharmacy spot may still ask a stylist to cover a sleeve, so say in your bio whether you accept coverage makeup. Small, coverable tattoos are the easiest to book across every category.

Can hand models have tattoos?

Mostly no, for the hand itself. Hand and parts clients shoot jewelry, nail color and product in close-up, and the brief is usually unmarked skin, even tone and no visible ink. A tattoo on the forearm or wrist can be framed out. Finger and knuckle tattoos generally rule out mainstream hand work. Hand modeling requirements covers the rest.

Are there modeling agencies for alternative models?

A small number, and several of the best known are in London and continental Europe rather than the US. In the US, alt models more often freelance: they list where brands search, work with tattoo shops and alternative fashion labels directly, and build a following. That route has no commission and no exclusivity, which suits a look agencies book inconsistently.
