Sports and athletic models, US

Sports modeling and athletic modeling

Brands selling running shoes, yoga wear and climbing gear need people who can really do the sport on camera. If you run, lift, climb, swim, serve or teach, that skill is bookable. Put your sports, city, dates and rate on one profile and brands email you directly. No commission.

Adults only. A person reads every profile before it goes public.

The short answer

How sports modeling jobs get booked

Sports modeling is paid work performing a sport or movement on camera for apparel, footwear, equipment, gym and health brands. It is cast on skill first: a client wants a runner whose stride looks right, a yogi who can hold the pose for forty frames, a golfer with a real swing. Most of it is booked directly by the brand or its photographer, close to the shoot date, and usually someone local.

Agencies with a sports or active board exist in a few cities and take a commission. A MaxGirls profile puts your sports, level, photos, city, availability and day rate on one page brands can search, and the brand writes to you with no agent in the middle.

Athletic modeling, two kinds

Booked for the body, or booked for the skill

People use "athletic modeling" for two different jobs. Knowing which one a client means tells you which photos to send and what to charge for.

Sports modeling jobs, by sport

Adaptive athletes are cast for sportswear and equipment work too. See models with disabilities.

Footwear, apparel

Running and track

Shoe and apparel brands, running stores and race organizers. The stride has to be real, shot after shot, often at dawn.

Studios, athleisure

Yoga and Pilates

Studios, mat and legging labels, wellness apps. Holding clean alignment through a long set is the whole job.

Equipment, gyms

Strength and CrossFit

Equipment makers, gyms and supplement brands. Correct lifting form under load, repeated safely for the camera.

Outdoor brands

Climbing and outdoor

Outdoor labels, gear makers and tourism boards. They need someone safe on rock or trail who knows the gear.

Clubs, apparel

Racket and golf

Tennis, pickleball and golf apparel and clubs. A believable swing or serve sells the product. A bad one ends the shoot.

Equipment, drinks

Swim, cycling, team sports

Goggles, bikes, team uniforms, sports drinks. College and club players are booked for exactly what they already do.

Activewear on a mid-size body has its own demand, covered on curvy modeling for mid size models, and everyday active scenes (a walk, a bike commute, a family hike) are cast as lifestyle modeling.

What a sports casting reads first

The person casting has a sport, a city and a date. The directory filters on category, city, age, height and availability; your sports and level belong in the headline and bio, stated plainly, so the reader knows in five seconds whether you can do the shot.

  • Sport and level, in facts: "ran D2 cross country", "RYT 200 yoga teacher", "8 handicap".
  • Action frames at real effort, sharp, with your face visible in at least two.
  • Sizes: top, bottom, shoe. Footwear clients book on shoe size before anything else.
  • Plain digitals in fitted activewear. See model digitals examples.

How to become a sports model

Four steps from athlete to first booking

  1. Pick your lead sport The one you could do on camera for three hours without your form falling apart. Add one or two more you do competently.
  2. Get action photos Ask a photographer or a friend with a fast lens to shoot you training. Morning light, plain kit, no visible logos, real effort.
  3. State your level Team, club, certification, years, times or handicap. Honest and specific beats "athletic". A brand will test it on set.
  4. Be searchable Publish the profile, set availability and a day rate, then send it to the running stores, studios and photographers near you.

Quoting for the first time? Read model day rates and usage rights, because footwear and equipment ads carry usage fees on top of the day.

Sports modeling agencies, or direct

A sports board, or brands booking you themselves

A search for sports modeling agencies mostly returns London, Hamburg and Cape Town. In the US the list is short. Here is how two agencies that book active talent describe themselves on their own sites, next to a direct profile.

Read from each agency's own site in October 2026. Apply to both kinds if you can. The schedule row is the one most athletes trip on: coaches, trainers and people with a nine-to-five rarely have open weekdays, and direct bookings are where a weekend or early-morning shoot comes from. A real agency never charges to submit. Our guide to legit modeling agencies for beginners shows how to check one, and freelance modeling covers working without one.

Questions

Sports modeling, answered

What is sports modeling?

Sports modeling is paid work where a brand books you to perform a sport or movement on camera: running in its shoes, climbing in its harness, serving with its racket, holding a pose in its leggings. The client is selling performance, so real skill and believable form matter more than height or a runway look.

How do I become a sports model?

Start from the sport you already do well. Get clean action photos of you doing it, plus simple digitals, and write down your level honestly (college, club, coach, years). Then publish a profile with your sports, city, availability and day rate where brands and photographers cast, and apply to agencies with a sports or fitness board if one is near you.

Do you have to be an athlete to be a sports model?

For skill shots, yes, in the sense that you must really do the sport. A photographer can spot a fake running stride or a bad golf grip in one frame, and so can the customer. You do not need to be a professional or a competitor. Coaches, instructors, college players and committed amateurs are booked all the time.

Is there a height requirement for athletic modeling?

Not as a rule. Sportswear campaigns on fashion boards often want taller models, but skill-led work is cast on the sport first. A 5 ft 3 in gymnast, a 5 ft 5 in climber and a 6 ft volleyball player all fit briefs written for those sports. MaxGirls has no height minimum; you publish your real height.

Are there sports modeling agencies near me?

Probably not, unless you live near New York, Los Angeles, Miami or Portland. The US has only a handful of agencies with a sports, active or fitness board, and they sign selectively. Most local sports work (a running store, a yoga studio, a regional outdoor brand) is booked directly by the brand or its photographer.

What should a sports model portfolio include?

Three to five sharp action frames of your main sport at real effort, one or two of a second sport, plain digitals in fitted activewear (front, side, back), and a smiling close-up. Add the date to physique shots. Skip heavy retouching: equipment and apparel clients want to see how you actually move and look today.

Can I do athletic modeling without an agency?

Yes. Activewear labels, gyms, studios, supplement and equipment brands regularly book direct, often through the photographer, and often someone local. An agency helps most with national campaigns and takes a commission for it. A searchable profile with your sports, city and dates covers the direct side, and you can do both.

What is the difference between a fitness model and a sports model?

A fitness model is booked mainly for physique and condition: gym, supplement and activewear images where the body is the message. A sports model is booked for skill in a specific sport. Many people do both. The portfolio differs, with dated physique shots for fitness and real action frames for sport.
