Is IMTA legit? IMTA modeling, reviewed

A real convention since 1987 with real agents in the room. Packages run about $4,000 to $5,000 before travel, and IMTA guarantees nothing.

IMTA is a real, long-running convention, not a fake one. The International Modeling and Talent Association has run modeling and acting conventions in New York and Los Angeles since 1987, agents and casting directors genuinely attend, and a handful of famous actors really were found there. What makes people ask whether it is legit is the price: families report paying $4,000 to $10,000 to go, IMTA itself guarantees nothing, and the money goes to the school that invited you before anyone has booked you for anything.

Below is what IMTA says about itself, what the packages cost according to member schools and reporting, what its BBB file shows, what your odds look like, and the questions to ask before you sign. If you only want to be seen by people who book models, there is a far cheaper way to do that, and it is at the end.

Is IMTA legit?

Yes, as a business: IMTA is a Phoenix-based membership organization of modeling and acting schools that has produced conventions for almost four decades, and its FAQ lists alumni such as Katie Holmes, Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Biel. Wikipedia confirms all three competed at IMTA early on. The harder question is whether it is worth the money for you, and IMTA answers part of that itself: "No one can guarantee jobs or success for models or talent. In short, attending IMTA does not guarantee success."

How the IMTA modeling convention works

You do not buy an IMTA ticket the way you buy a concert ticket. IMTA's FAQ says people "can only come to IMTA with one of our member training centers," which hold local searches: open auditions, often advertised as model or talent searches. Anyone can attend a search. The school then invites some people to join its IMTA group, usually with a package of pre-convention classes, headshots, registration and hotel. IMTA's members page now also offers direct registration in select cities, without saying which.

At the convention, contestants compete in modeling, acting, singing and dancing categories judged by the industry guests. Agents write the contestant numbers they want to meet on callback sheets, and on callback day contestants meet those agents, managers and casting directors. IMTA calls it a closed convention with an invited list of companies. The minimum age is four, and there is no upper age limit for commercial models and actors, though high fashion runway entrants must be 23 or under for women and 28 or under for men.

How much does IMTA cost?

Expect $4,000 to $5,000 for the package alone, and several thousand more once flights, hotel and a parent are added. IMTA publishes no price and says its own registration fee is "a small portion" of what the school charges. The figures below are the ones member schools and reporters have put in writing.

Some families finance it. IMTA's own FAQ suggests sponsorships and fundraising such as car washes and bake sales. If you are about to put a package on a card or a payment plan, read the contract the school hands you line by line: the refund terms, what happens if you cannot travel, and whether the parent package is mandatory for a minor. A tool that pulls the key terms and deadlines out of a contract helps if the paperwork runs to several pages, but the three business day cancellation question below is the one to answer first.

IMTA reviews and the BBB record

IMTA's BBB profile lists it in Phoenix, Arizona, not accredited, with a B- rating. The reason BBB gives is "failure to respond to 1 complaint." That complaint, filed in September 2024, is a billing dispute over a registration charge and a payment plan, and it shows no company reply. There are no customer reviews on the profile at all, which is unusual for a business that says thousands of people attend.

Search for IMTA reviews and you will also find imta-scam.com and imta.reviews, two sites with identical content that answer "is IMTA a scam" in IMTA's own first person ("IMTA is most definitely not a scam") and link only to IMTA's official accounts. Read them as the company's side, not as independent reviews. The best known critical source, crimes-of-persuasion.com, relies mostly on reporting from 2001 to 2004, so treat its numbers as history rather than today's prices.

What are the odds of getting signed at IMTA?

Low, and nobody publishes a hard number. IMTA told Dateline in 2009 that about 80 percent of participants get callbacks "to further explore" their potential. A callback is a meeting, not a contract. A former IMTA employee quoted by the New York Post in 2001 put it far lower: around 10 percent meet with agents, and fewer than 2 percent sign. The Screen Actors Guild's representative told Dateline that when thousands attend, "odds are someone who's gonna drop in who has 'it,'" and that "it doesn't make the actual convention any more legitimate."

The famous alumni are real. They are also a handful of people out of decades of conventions. An Elite agent's advice in the same Dateline report is worth repeating to any parent: take clear photos outside in daylight, hair back, no makeup, and send them to agencies directly. That costs nothing.

Is IMTA the same as Barbizon or John Casablancas?

No. IMTA is the convention, and the schools that recruit for it are separate businesses. A Barbizon franchise near Philadelphia is a current IMTA member and holds IMTA auditions twice a month, while Barbizon told Dateline the conventions are "independent of Barbizon international." John Casablancas students have attended in the past. The PMTM Agency in Akron told a BBB reviewer in 2024 that it is "no longer part of IMTA." If a school invited you, read our reviews of John Casablancas, Barbizon, MTM and PMTM as well, because the school's fees come before the convention's.

Your rights if you already paid

The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives you until midnight of the third business day to cancel certain sales of $130 or more made away from the seller's permanent place of business, including hotel rooms and convention centers where many searches are held. It does not cover a sale negotiated at the school's own office, so where you signed matters. The FTC's broader line on modeling offers is short: "Real modeling agencies won't ask you to pay for a test shoot, for your photographs, or to 'secure your spot' for a modeling job."

IMTA's site also warns that it "DOES NOT contact, scout or offer bookings via IG, FB" and never asks for lingerie or nude photos. A message on social media claiming to be IMTA is not IMTA. Report it at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Questions to ask before you pay for IMTA

  • What exactly is in the package, in writing: classes, photos, registration, hotel nights, how many competitions?
  • What will flights, meals and a parent package add, and is a parent package required for a minor?
  • What is the refund policy if we cancel, or if the convention dates change?
  • How many of your students went last year, and how many signed with an agency afterward? Ask for names you can check.
  • Does the school receive anything from IMTA for each contestant it brings?
  • If you would represent my child after the convention, what commission would you take?

What to do instead of paying for IMTA

If the goal is acting, IMTA is one route among many and an acting coach can tell you whether it fits. If the goal is paid modeling work, most of it never goes near a convention. Commercial, catalog, e-commerce, fit, lifestyle and parts clients book models directly, in their own city, on a specific day, and they find them by searching.

Do the free one first. Then shoot five clean photos in daylight, build a model comp card from them, and publish your measurements, city, day rate and availability on a reviewed profile that brands can search. For what that covers, see what a model account includes; for the direct work that pays most new models, read print and catalog modeling jobs. A full year on Talent is $228, less than a tenth of a $4,200 package before anyone has booked a flight. For the wider pattern of pay-first offers, read how modeling scams are built, and when you are ready, create your profile.
